Abhishek, Tilak, Dube stave off Pakistan to clinch India’s gold

India staved off a spirited effort from Pakistan to secure their second consecutive gold medal in the men’s cricket event at the 2026 Asian Games, clinching the final by 19 runs. Abhishek Sharma laid the foundation for a huge score with a rapid fifty, before Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube reprised their heroics from last year’s Asia Cup final to power India to 211. Hasan Nawaz then struck a valiant 96 and threatened to pull off the unthinkable, but India held their nerve and ensured the asking rate remained a steep one to keep Pakistan at bay.

India’s decision to bat first was vindicated by an 81-run Powerplay that belied the nature of a surface offering spin, even as it produced the highest match aggregate of the competition. Pakistan’s strategy of bowling the leg-spin of Saad Masood in the second over backfired dramatically – he was first taken apart by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a couple of sixes before Abhishek joined in to turn it into a 24-run over. Sooryavanshi gloved an attempted reverse-hit to the ‘keeper off Saim Ayub, but Pakistan continued to err far too short with their lengths. And every time they did, Abhishek pounced on it, while even a decent delivery was pumped over Ayub’s head off the back foot.

India raced to fifty in 3.2 overs and while Sanju Samson fell cheaply, there was no stopping Abhishek. He survived a dropped catch and a run out chance but none of it fazed him as he brought up a 20-ball fifty. Arafat Minhas had the left-hander stumped off one that kept low, and while Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan consolidated proceedings, Pakistan’s spinners tightened the lid once they found their lengths. Shreyas in particular struggled to kick on and fell shortly after Kishan was bowled on the pull as India’s asking rate dropped well below 10, going through a 34-ball phase without a boundary.

It was Tilak who broke that drought at the start of the 17th over before Dube hacked one to the fence himself. The floodgates had opened again as Sufyan Moqim fed a couple in the slot which Tilak dispatched, before Dube stepped out and pummeled Ayub for successive sixes of his own. The 19th over produced 23 runs and while Dube fell at the start of the 20th, Tilak tore into Ahmed Daniyal for a couple of sixes to power India past 200 and bring up a 21-ball fifty. Pakistan’s woes were fittingly summed up by a dropped catch off the last ball as India finished with an imposing total.
