The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously approved a resolution expressing strong opposition to the Karnataka government’s proposal to build a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery River at Mekedatu.
The resolution, introduced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, urged the Union Government not to grant any approvals for the project, including technical, environmental, or other statutory clearances.
Presenting the resolution, the Chief Minister stated that the proposed dam should not move forward without adherence to the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal issued on February 5, 2007, and the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on February 16, 2018. He further emphasized that the project cannot be undertaken without the consent of the affected Cauvery basin States and the necessary approvals from the Central Government.
The Assembly reiterated Tamil Nadu’s position that any unilateral action concerning the sharing and management of Cauvery waters could adversely affect the interests of downstream States and therefore requires consultation and concurrence from all stakeholders.
