The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has expressed regret over the inclusion of content discussing alleged corruption in the judiciary in its newly introduced Class 8 Social Science textbook. The apology came after the Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance of the issue on February 25, 2026.
In an official statement, NCERT acknowledged that certain passages in the textbook were inappropriate and attributed their inclusion to an unintended lapse in editorial judgment. The organisation said it sincerely regretted the mistake and assured that corrective measures had been initiated.
According to officials, instructions were issued on February 24, 2026, directing that the circulation of the textbook be suspended with immediate effect until further orders. The following day, the Supreme Court formally registered a suo motu case, observing that the material contained selective references concerning the judiciary.
NCERT reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest academic standards and stated that the matter would be addressed through appropriate review and corrective action before any further distribution of the textbook.
