Why Exceptional Young Mathematicians Need Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Arjun sits quietly in the back row while his classmates work through another exercise on applying the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle. The lesson is familiar territory for him. As the teacher explains the solution, Arjun’s thoughts drift elsewhere—he is reflecting on a fourth independent proof of the theorem that he recently developed. His story illustrates a reality faced by many gifted young mathematicians: their intellectual curiosity and abilities often extend far beyond what a standard school curriculum can offer.

India has been participating in International Mathematical Olympiads from 1989. In that year, India ranked 25th among 50 countries that participated. In the year 2024, India ranked fourth among 108 participating countries.
