The United States and Iran have reached a tentative understanding that has eased immediate tensions, but major disagreements over Tehran’s nuclear programme remain unresolved.
According to reports, the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) postpones the most difficult nuclear-related issues instead of settling them outright. Such an arrangement may be favourable to Iran, as it allows the country to retain its current nuclear infrastructure and capabilities for the time being.
On June 14, representatives of the Trump administration and Iranian officials reportedly agreed on a preliminary framework aimed at halting ongoing hostilities and creating a 60-day period for formal negotiations. Pakistan, which facilitated the talks, stated that the agreement is expected to be signed in Switzerland on June 19. Once signed, the Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen, and the United States is anticipated to end its naval restrictions in the region.
The complete text of the MoU has not yet been made public. Jeffrey Lewis, a global security expert at Middlebury College, commented on X that both Washington and Tehran may present highly selective interpretations of the agreement. He advised observers to reserve judgment until the official document is released.
